Internship Opportunities: Building Future Leaders

What is the Gaia Guides Summer Internship Program, and who can participate?

The Gaia Guides Summer Internship Program is an exclusive opportunity for young leaders aged 13 and above who have completed our Leadership Training Program. This 15-day internship provides participants with hands-on experience in customer service, coaching, and group management at Gaia Guides summer camps. Designed to help kids build essential skills and confidence, this program bridges the gap between training and real-world job readiness.

Why is this internship valuable for my child’s future?

The Internship Program offers unique benefits, including:

  • Resume-Worthy Experience: Participants gain a competitive edge with practical skills and real-world achievements to showcase on their resumes.

  • Confidence Boost: Interns enhance their self-esteem through successful task completion and positive reinforcement.

  • Workforce Preparation: From customer service to safety skills, interns learn essential tools for thriving in their first jobs and beyond.

Additionally, the application process—which includes creating materials and practicing interview skills—is an invaluable experience that prepares participants for future opportunities.

What does the Internship Program involve?

Interns commit to working 15 full days over a three-month summer period, typically on a consistent schedule of three to five days per week. Responsibilities include:

  • Coaching and mentoring participants.

  • Managing group activities with a focus on safety and risk management.

  • Providing excellent customer service to campers, parents, and staff.

Interns are expected to demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and enthusiasm, serving as role models for their peers and younger participants.

What are the physical requirements and desired skills for interns?

To excel in the program, interns should:

  • Be strong swimmers, comfortable in open water (San Francisco Bay).

  • Have the physical ability to lift and carry equipment up to 45 pounds and engage in activities like paddling, kayaking, and walking for extended periods.

  • Possess excellent customer service skills and the ability to work well with a diverse team of staff, instructors, volunteers, and youth participants.

  • Exhibit self-motivation, initiative, and a positive attitude.

  • Commit to fostering a safe, inclusive, and productive environment.

What is the application and interview process?

To apply, prospective interns must:

  1. Complete the Gaia Guides Internship Application.

  2. Participate in an interview with direct supervisors.

  3. Submit written parental consent for the internship application and schedule commitment.

Admission to the program is competitive due to limited space, making the application process an excellent exercise in preparing for real-world job applications.

How are interns supported during the program?

Interns receive consistent guidance and feedback throughout their internship:

  • Weekly Check-Ins: Supervisors provide personalized support to help interns develop their skills and address any challenges.

  • Monthly Written Reviews: These evaluations keep interns and their parents informed of progress, highlighting both strengths and areas for growth.

  • Continuous Improvement: Interns have opportunities to enhance their paddling and safety skills through coaching and practice.

  • Final Review: At the end of the program, interns receive a comprehensive evaluation of their performance.

Are there opportunities beyond the internship?

Yes! Select high-performing interns may be invited to apply for paid positions with Gaia Guides Summer Camp. These roles include instructing summer camps, hosting kids’ parties, and working with school groups. While completing the internship does not guarantee an invitation, it’s an excellent stepping stone for future opportunities.
