We Are Hiring 2026 Summer Camp Instructors

Gaia Guides is seeking enthusiastic outdoor leaders to join our Summer Camp team in Alameda, CA. We’re looking for individuals who have experience working with kids or guiding outdoor adventures, and who are excited to create safe, joyful, and memorable experiences for young paddlers. If you’re passionate about youth development, love being on the water, and thrive in a positive, high-energy environment, we’d love to meet you. Our Alameda summer kids camps offer both full-day and half-day options, with each 1-week camp session running Monday–Friday.

Season: June - August

Lead Instructor Position

As a Lead Instructor, you’re the point person leading the flow of the camp day. You oversee all daily program operations from organizing groups and coordinating activities to managing staff, equipment, and on-water adventures. You’ll guide kids around the Bay, lead your team with confidence, and create an environment that feels safe, fun, and full of stoke. This role is perfect for confident paddlers, calm decision-makers, and natural leaders who love turning a day in the sun into an unforgettable experience for young adventurers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all daily camp operations, including schedules, group flow, activity transitions, and waterfront logistics

  • Lead kayaking and paddleboarding instruction with clear, supportive, confidence-building teaching

  • Maintain high standards of safety and risk management throughout the program

  • Supervise, mentor, and support Assistant Instructors and Interns

  • Communicate professionally and warmly with parents, campers, and staff

  • Facilitate environmental lessons, shoreline exploration, and nature-based activities

  • Manage equipment needs, support setup/breakdown, and lead daily staff debriefs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Age 18+

  • Experience leading paddling or adventure programs

  • Confident swimmer, comfortable in open water

  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)

  • Experience working with youth in outdoor, camp, or educational settings

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and risk-management abilities

  • Background in outdoor leadership or environmental education

  • Lifeguard certification

Assistant Instructor Position

As an Assistant Instructor, you’re the captain of the daily camp experience. You’ll guide groups of kids on the water, manage the flow of the day, and help create an atmosphere that feels safe, empowering, and full of adventure. This role is perfect for youth educators, outdoor adventure leaders, confident paddlers, environmental educators, and anyone who loves turning a day on the Bay into a meaningful memory for young adventurers. You set the tone, support the team, and bring the stoke.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead groups of campers ages 6–14 through paddling sessions, games, and shoreline adventures

  • Teach kayaking and paddleboarding with clear, supportive, step-by-step instruction

  • Keep safety and risk awareness front and center on the water, on the dock, and everywhere in between

  • Create a positive, encouraging environment for kids to grow, explore, and push their comfort zones

  • Guide environmental lessons, nature walks, and ocean-minded activities

  • Help manage gear, organize equipment, and support smooth camp operations

  • Communicate professionally with parents and staff while keeping things upbeat and connected

  • Mentor Assistant Instructors and Interns as they grow their leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Age 16+

  • Confident swimmer with some kayaking or paddleboarding experience

  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)

  • Enjoy working with children and being active outdoors

  • Strong communication skills and a positive, teachable attitude

  • Experience in camps, youth programs, or outdoor recreation

  • Strong paddling or outdoor skill background

  • Interest in environmental education or leadership development

Teen Internship Program

The Gaia Guides Teen Summer Internship is an exciting next step for teens ages 13+ who’ve completed our Leadership Training. Over 20 days, interns join our camp instructor team to gain real-world experience leading activities, mentoring younger campers, and supporting daily operations. It’s a unique chance for motivated teens to build confidence, leadership, and job-ready skills—all while spending the summer outdoors doing what they love. Completion of Leadership Training is required to apply; spots are limited and not guaranteed.
